Positive Behaviour for Learning

Huakina Mai/Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

The purpose of PB4L - school wide and Huakina Mai at Mairehau Primary School is to use a strengths based approach to develop a culture that supports learning and positive behaviour.

Our school wide PB4L focuses on four key values of Respect, Believe, Aspire and Achieve.

It’s not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems and practices we have in place to support them to make positive behaviour choices.

What is it?

An intervention:

  • for creating an environment for learning that is underpinned by positive caring relationships and inclusive values

  • that supports all MPS students to be successful both in learning and behaviour

  • that supports the development of key competencies that tamariki need for academic and social success

  • that supports six mana ki ti mana principles of inclusion

  • It is a relational based intervention that provides a strength-based approach to support Māori. What is good for our Māori tamariki is good for all tamariki at MPS.

Why we do it?

  • So learners have the skills and attitude to become life-long, contributors to society

  • To build a community of ako who are respectful, self regulated, responsible

  • To mentor and support tamariki to make positive choices in all situations of kura and community life

  • To encourage intrinsic motivation and engagement

  • To increase student agency through choice

  • To respond in a culturally appropriate way which acknowledges the Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  • To strengthen our place of belonging by ensuring our environment is culturally inclusive

  • To help tamariki to become connected to their learning through positive behaviour choices

  • To value the home school relationship and how this strengthens our community as a whole
